There is no upper limit to the risks men are willing to take in order to succeed, and if there is an upper limit for women, they will succeed less.† (Clay Shirky, 202) Shirky, the author of â€Å"A Rant about Women† argues that women must become more aggressive and demanding to ultimately achieve their goals. No matter how society reacts, men take on any action, bypassing the â€Å"Golden Rule† to achieve their goals and desires. On the other hand, women lack this procedure in their search for self-promotion, as Shirky argues. However, in Chisholm’s speech â€Å"Equal Rights for Women†, Chisholm argues that the undeniable reason for gender inequality in the 1970’s, was the lack of opportunities women were given in the workplace. Chisholm’s viewpoint includes the reason women weren’t treated with equal respect as men, was because women weren’t given the chance. Both authors battle the reason for gender inequality equally de monstrating how this social problem existed; only differentiating on the reasons. In this essay I will argue that Shirky’s position on gender inequality is stronger based on the anecdotes he provides of women asserting themselves to become more successful; additionally providing a solution for women to become more aggressive. In the 1970’s, when a woman walked into an interview, she was questioned if she can type. This occurs because of the stereotype that women usually occupy the lower standard jobs; the less important ones, in other words. The positions women usually occupy include: secretaries, librarians, and teachers, because women are viewed as incapable of withholding job options such as managers, administrators, doctors, lawyers, and Members of Congress. As Shirley Chisholm declares in her speech, â€Å"The unspoken assump... ...unately still exists today. Both Shirky and Chisholm work at publicizing this issue to society, however represent different reasons for why this issue exists. Shirky believes women are not as aggressive in demanding self-promotion as well as equality, while Shirley believes the root of gender inequality is the low amount of opportunities women are given in the workplace in comparison to men. While I consider Shirky’s argument stronger, I still agree with Chisholm’s argument based off of the job position evidence she provides. Based off both articles, women need to become more arrogant and selfish to rightfully demand what is theirs, no matter what the consequence. Men can do it, so why can’t women? No Utopia Found in Wendell Berry’s What Are People For? The preface to Wendell Berry’s What Are People For? is in the form of a two-part poem, titled â€Å"Damage† and â€Å"Healing.† By carefully digging through its cryptic obscurities (â€Å"It is despair that sees the work failing in one’s own failure†), we find the main message: The more diminutive, local, and settled a culture, the healthier it is and the less â€Å"damage† it inflicts upon its people and the land. Berry can be called a utopian but not in the traditional sense. He pines not for the future but for the past. Basing his lifestyle upon his boyhood memories of fifty years ago as well as America’s pioneer days, Berry is confident he has found the answer to the perfect existence. In this case, book and individual are difficult to separate. What Are People For? is Wendell Berry, so to criticize one is to criticize the other. His book is a compilation of contemplative essays on subjects ranging from literature to technology from the perspective of a Kentucky farmer. Having been in the same profession and location most of his young life, Berry in 1958 (at age twenty-four) accepted a Stanford University Stegner Fellowship. Intrigued, he decided to read Stegner’s books and take this professor’s writing seminar. Berry is reverent and testifies that Stegner filled the Jones Room of the Stanford Library with an aura of literary authority. It is here that Berry learns â€Å"responsible writing.† This is writing that contains the values one has â€Å"proven† by living exclusively in one country place and by perfecting one’s knowledge of the place so as to bring sustainable benefit to it. Responsible writing actively promotes â€Å"good agriculture and forestry† unlike writing â€Å"by self-styled smart people in the offices and laboratories of a centralized economy and then sold at the highest possible profit to the supposedly dumb country people.† What Berry says about his seminar experience is that it started him on his development toward working at home, and away from his assumption â€Å"that I was going to follow a literary career that would lead me far from [Henry County] to teach at a university in a large city.† In important ways Berry has some very good ideas. Concerned that radio and television have done too much to homogenize society, he uses â€Å"Nate Shaw† (a pseudonym) to provide an illustration of a man who lived without euphemistic clichà ©s.

Smart Kids

Will you ever find a star quarterback on the high school debate team, Chess Club, or any other academic team that would place him as a nerd? According to Grant Penrod and his essay Anti-Intellectualism: Why We Hate Smart Kids this would probably not happen (Bullock,691). You can be a jock, but you can’t be a â€Å"nerd† at the same time. The winning football team always goes down in history, but the winning academic teams are never remembered. Thinking back to high school you can see billboards of the football team winning state, but not for the state brain-bowl winners.Social destruction is possible for those who show too much intelligence. â€Å"Geek,† â€Å"Nerd,† or â€Å"High Achiever† no matter the name given; they are doomed for destruction in the social world. The intellectual student bears a mark on him/her for social pitfall especially in high school. Sometimes this may happen in the early elementary years. They are usually targeted on web sites and blogs; left out of social events. (Bullock,691) There are other websites that talk about test score postings, and don’t these people referencing nerds and geeks have a life. This miss conception is partly due to the un-intelligent thinking that all smart people do is study. Failing to realize that the intelligent people are the ones that help move the world along; this miss conception it actually leaves the un-intelligent out. The media places celebrities and other public figures without a strong education in the limelight, which is harmful to our youth’s minds.This type of high regards for someone lacking good education, further promotes the way society treats those that are educated. If you take a young high school student who has some athletic ability chances of him/her pursuing the highest academic achievements are less than them going after that athletic win. A choir student may go for the Nashville break instead of pursuing a degree in school. Displaying celebrities’ lives and their income only encourages young minds to seek other ways of living without getting educated.A website that demonstrates this is Angelfire. com it promotes famous high school dropouts like Christian Aguilera, Kid Rock, L. L. Cool J and Sammy Sosa. (Bullock,693) Some people have no regards for the intelligence that lead them to where we are in society today. People would rather choose to be rich than to have some means of keeping their wealth. Ignoring that intelligent people are the ones that helped make the progress of the world, and because they are forgotten this is why many individuals do not finish their education.The anti-intelligent want to blame the media, but in all reality it is the common everyday person who is to blame for ostracizing the intelligent.
